What dithering should I use?

Apply dither any time you reduce bit depth. If you’re reducing to 24 bits, the type and strength of dither almost don’t matter. If you’re reducing to 16 bits (or less), a low to medium dither level with some noise shaping is probably best.

Should you dither before mastering?

So when you’re saving out at 16 or 24-bit before mastering a file, especially more than once, correct dithering is essential.

Is dither white noise?

The most basic form of dither is flat, white noise. The ear, however, is less sensitive to certain frequencies than others at low levels (see Equal-loudness contour).

Which noise is used for dithering?

white noise
The most basic form of dither is flat, white noise. The ear, however, is less sensitive to certain frequencies than others at low levels (see Equal-loudness contour).

Does dither also preserve low level information?

Through the use of dither, you can not only eliminate the distortion, but also preserve the low level details too. As such, an audio file with dither applied should sound the same at a lower bit depth as it did at a higher bit depth, but with the addition of very low level dither noise.

Why do we need dithering?

Dithering is the process of adding noise to a signal, in an effort to mask and randomize higher-order harmonics, and in turn, make quantization distortion less perceivable. Dithering should only be used during the mastering process, and only when the bit depth of a signal is being reduced.

What is the point of dithering?

Dither is an intentionally applied form of noise used to randomize quantization error, preventing large-scale patterns such as color banding in images. Dither is routinely used in processing of both digital audio and video data, and is often one of the last stages of mastering audio to a CD.

What is master bias?

5.- Master Bias A bias frame is a frame taken with exposure time 0 and in absence of any signal (in darkness). A master bias frame is the result of averaging a set of bias frames (10 or more). The master bias frame used by the pipeline is called master_bias. bdf and is created with the procedure averaging.

What are dark flats?

Darks – Depending on your exposure time, these can be a chore. I go for at least 20, and up to 50. Though for really long exposures, I’ve used as few as 5. Flats – I have varied between 25 – 50, but really see no improvement over 25, so have stuck with that of late. Dark Flats – Match your number of flats.
